Summary

Perfect for fans of The Last Magician and Descendant of the Crane, this heart-stopping debut is an imaginative Romeo and Juliet retelling set in 1920s Shanghai, with rival gangs and a monster in the depths of the Huangpu River。

The year is 1926, and Shanghai hums to the tune of debauchery。

A blood feud between two gangs runs the streets red, leaving the city helpless in the grip of chaos。 At the heart of it all is eighteen-year-old Juliette Cai, a former flapper who has returned to assume her role as the proud heir of the Scarlet Gang—a network of criminals far above the law。 Their only rivals in power are the White Flowers, who have fought the Scarlets for generations。 And behind every move is their heir, Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love…and first betrayal。

But when gangsters on both sides show signs of instability culminating in clawing their own throats out, the people start to whisper。 Of a contagion, a madness。 Of a monster in the shadows。 As the deaths stack up, Juliette and Roma must set their guns—and grudges—aside and work together, for if they can’t stop this mayhem, then there will be no city left for either to rule。

Absolutely phenomenal from start to finish。 Gong somehow combines the whit and intricacy of the Six of Crows duology and the concept of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers to create not only a riveting and incredibly unique novel, but also a novel that depicts the pain that Chinese citizens residing in Shanghai felt in the 1920s after their city was split off into spheres of influence。 The concepts of othering, “city on a hill,” and socio-economic divides are also expertly woven throughout。 On to Absolutely phenomenal from start to finish。 Gong somehow combines the whit and intricacy of the Six of Crows duology and the concept of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers to create not only a riveting and incredibly unique novel, but also a novel that depicts the pain that Chinese citizens residing in Shanghai felt in the 1920s after their city was split off into spheres of influence。 The concepts of othering, “city on a hill,” and socio-economic divides are also expertly woven throughout。 On to the next one! 。。。more

I picked this up hoping for a Romeo & Juliet-style romance but the romance is a minor subplot so I was disappointed。 Read this expecting a bloody sci-fi gangster story and it might be more satisfying。

Not usually a fan of YA novels and this is a perfect example of why that is。Let me preface this review by saying that while I didn't personally enjoy it, I could definitely see the appeal of it and could still see myself recommending it to some people, specifically younger readers。 Some pro's before we get into the cons: The prose, while arguably empty, was still beautiful。 The side characters were actually somewhat interesting。 The concept of the book was great。 Worldbuilding / Setting were coo Not usually a fan of YA novels and this is a perfect example of why that is。Let me preface this review by saying that while I didn't personally enjoy it, I could definitely see the appeal of it and could still see myself recommending it to some people, specifically younger readers。 Some pro's before we get into the cons: The prose, while arguably empty, was still beautiful。 The side characters were actually somewhat interesting。 The concept of the book was great。 Worldbuilding / Setting were cool。 The plot was intriguing enough for me to not put the book down。However, I had many, many issues with the book and some of the creative decisions。Head hopping is quite prominent and often confusing。The characters were really just meh。 Even Juliette, being a 'cold hearted killer who actually has a heart' felt like weak execution of the heroine。 To me it felt like the author tried to force some complexity into the character in some cases, but my reaction was never anything other than a shrug。 I also found her to be annoying and childish, especially when it came to her relationship wtih Roma。 Earlier I said the plot was strong enough to keep me reading, which is true, but I can't say I was a big fan of the narrative arc itself。 Now, while the end actually got me interested in the sequel, I don't believe i'll be continuing the series。 I had desperately hoped that i would like this book but it came as a bit of a disappointment。 All around, this book was not at all for me, but I don't regret the experience。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book really made me suffer。 Juliette pretending to kill Marshall in the end had me literally devastatingly crying。 I haven’t felt this much despair whilst reading a book in a long time… ofc you kinda know he won’t be dead, but in this moment I just stopped logically thinking, just replayed the fact that Marshall and Benedikt will never be able to love each other in the way they deserve it。The book is incredible, especially the second part of it。 I kinda want to reread the first one, so I ca This book really made me suffer。 Juliette pretending to kill Marshall in the end had me literally devastatingly crying。 I haven’t felt this much despair whilst reading a book in a long time… ofc you kinda know he won’t be dead, but in this moment I just stopped logically thinking, just replayed the fact that Marshall and Benedikt will never be able to love each other in the way they deserve it。The book is incredible, especially the second part of it。 I kinda want to reread the first one, so I can properly picture Shanghai, Juliette and the Scarlett Gang and won’t be distracted by my excitement what’s to come next。 The description of the insects literally made my whole body itch, it was a pretty well constructed and well written danger, without the monster it wouldn’t even be Fantasy。I will DEFINITELY read the sequel, like pls we need MarshallxBenedikt (if they don’t become lovers, it will be the biggest disappointment everrrrr) and ofc RomaxJuliette (i love their relationship, it’s not easy, nor cheesy。 It is Romeo and Juliette in a new refreshing version with a strong female character) and I’m also interested in Kathleen’s story。 Addition: I like the names in this book, especially the Russian ones, I think the change from Romeo to Roma is just perfect。I can’t really pick a fav character, but Marshall and Benedikt and Roma and Alisa are the top top ones, then come Juliette and Kathleen followed by the rest… i guess i’d be a White Flower。I’m still in the weird mood after reading a book where your thoughts are all over the place and the emotion remains although your mind comes back to reality, so I guess my opinion and point of view will still change, but I’m already looking forward to reading this review and remember everything I felt。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 From other reviews I was a little skeptical (taking into account the author wrote this when she was 19) because the writing was drawn out and fluffy in a very YA novel way。 Like, this book didn’t need to be nearly 500 pages, fluffy。 However, there were many scenes that I could picture as if they were straight out of a movie (the writing was still beautiful in my opinion)。 There were times when I thought the reading was very slow because of all of the details, but the I really enjoyed this book。 From other reviews I was a little skeptical (taking into account the author wrote this when she was 19) because the writing was drawn out and fluffy in a very YA novel way。 Like, this book didn’t need to be nearly 500 pages, fluffy。 However, there were many scenes that I could picture as if they were straight out of a movie (the writing was still beautiful in my opinion)。 There were times when I thought the reading was very slow because of all of the details, but the plot itself kept me going。 I’d recommend this book but just be warned… you may be reading awhile! 。。。more

The pov is hard to follow sometimes and there’s a lot of exposition but the story is great, I love Romeo and Juliet so obviously a huge fan of this。

。。。more

I hated everything about this book。 The plot was ok but the characters were really boring and julitte wasn’t a bad ass like i heard in so many reviews, she just didn’t give that vibe。 I couldn’t finish it i tried but no and it was a shame because I was very excited about this book。

Well written story! The hook of Romeo and Juliet set in 1920's Shanghai was enough to grab my attention, but to keep it throughout is a sign that the book is a good one。 I really liked Juliet as a character - the sort of femme fatale mixed with a weary investigator vibe she has is great。 As a slight negative, Roma didn't feel as well formed or deeply written as Juliet, but I enjoyed him still。 A great setting, creepy enemy, fun investigation with fun characters - Read it!
